The two-face Mirrors of Aref Montazeri

in conversation with Hania Afifi. Aref Montazeri contemporarised the ancient Mirror Art, whose output can be seen in many of the harams, palaces and mosques across ancient Persia. Inspired by the reflective mirror surface that turns into bedazzling geometric patterns that ornate the halls and ceilings of the most prized buildings, Montazeri cuts and manipulates both the reflective and reverse sides of the mirror to create stand-alone sculptures that can be admired and reflected upon for their own narrative, materiality and conception technique.

Monster Chetwynd, if spirits and demons become reality

Rite of passage, liberation, space of rupture, limits, chaos, law, life, order, death, identity, masks, high culture and popular culture, ancient and modern, serious and humorous are all elements the British artist, Monster Chetwynd, mixes in her artistic research that swings between the magical ritual and the social experiment, creating an atmosphere that feels as if we are between a village festival and the Ancient Greek Theater.

Sohei Nishino, reinventing carthography for the modern world

“Cities amplify themselves, repeatedly. They emerge and disappear while they continue to integrate themselves”. It’s this consideration that motivated Japanese photographer Sohei Nishino to start his journeys from place to place and create his impressive panoramic series, made of thousands of photographs combined, half way between a map and a diorama.

Anthony McCall / The light building a dialogue

Nature and the physics of light fascinated the greatest minds in history from Galileo to Newton and, in more recent times, came the abstract experimentation by Laslo Moholy-Nagy and that of Man Ray with his negative photographic prints exposed to “solarization”.  Impressionist art has also attempted to imitate the effects of light with the application of artistic means of expression without the use of an emitting source, we can see the great allusive impact in the paintings by Monet and Renoir. The intention to find the plastic use of light is instead highlighted in the works of Lucio Fontana and of the Twenty Cent Art Group. The theme of light manipulation has also affected the British avant-garde artist Anthony McCall since the seventies.

Tom McGlynn: Standards (and variations on a formalist theme)

How can one contribute an advancement to painting?  It would seem to some that all possible outcomes have been explored. Perhaps it is in the acceptance of the idiom’s exhaustion in which one may realize discovery within their form.

Vincent Fournier: a time traveler taking the past into the future

It is easy to cross the border between fiction and reality, while diving in the imagery of Vincent Fournier, and this is not only because of the suspended atmosphere and the unusual representation of spaces and human figures. He explores the conceptual frontier between concreteness and imagination, between past and future, and in this intermediate parallel reality he identifies a non-space, the ideal scenario to document the possible forms of a possible future.
